Green Tourism Canada Programme Background

In 2010, the Green Tourism Programme began a pilot with 31 British Columbia tourism businesses across six tourism regions in BC. All businesses were assessed by a senior green tourism assessor from the UK and were scored against a rigorous set of sustainability indicators to determine if their performance had achieved a certification award level of Bronze, Silver of Gold.

In 2013, Green Tourism partnered with GreenStep Solutions Inc. to conduct the third-party assessments to tourism operators interested in becoming certified. Two senior assessors from the UK travelled to Canada to train the Canadian assessors, and now sit on the Gold Review panel for all Canadian Gold graded members. The programme remained focused on BC companies until 2015, and is now expanding into Alberta. Green Tourism Canada will be rolling out to all Canadian provinces next year, and into the USA in 2017.
