Case Study from ‘The Green House Hotel’ : as one of the top “eco-hotels” not just in the UK… but in the world
The luxury and boutique Green House Hotel in Bournemouth demonstrates ongoing commitment and success in tackling green issues. The hotel’s recognition as one of the top “eco-hotels” not just in the UK… but in the world, bears testament to its success. The extensive work and investment undertaken to ensure the highest standards of ethical and sustainable sourcing include the use of innovative technology; instillation of an on-site Ozone Laundry operation to minimise water and energy consumption, manage waste and environmental impact and the use of solar power for electricity generation, to further reduce energy consumption. Whilst ensuring originality and the consistent quality of guest products and services.
The hotel set themselves the challenge of becoming the ‘greenest hotel in the UK’ and on the journey to achieving a truly green hotel, made over 100 changes. To underpin this green tourism goal, the hotel established five core principles which put sustainability, social responsibility and the guest at the centre of the hotel’s decision making and operations.
This case study examines how, as part of their sustainable tourism framework, the hotel applied technology and supplier selection criteria to linens; to green a key area of any hotel, and how this linen changeover helped to contribute to The Green House’s goal of becoming the greenest hotel in the UK.
Supplier Selection Criteria
Using suppliers that match your principles is a key part of green tourism. All The Green House Hotel suppliers are assessed on recognised environmental standards and the hotel’s ongoing commitment to, “keep making the Green House even greener,” underpins supplier relationships, to ensure a working partnership which contributes to this goal.
Fou furnishings ® was selected to supply the hotel linens as the company profile and products match with the hotel’s core principles; a green framework which puts sustainability, social responsibility and the guest at the centre of decision making and operations, as well as originality and consistent quality of linens.
The hotel linens supplier – www.foufurnishings.com, is a listed Green Tourism supplier, who has dual certification – the UK Soil Association to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and also Fairtrade for linens made with 100% Fairtrade certified organic cotton; the ‘gold standard’ for sustainable cotton. These globally trusted standards give assurance on social and environmental responsibility, cotton quality and performance, plus an absence of any irritating toxic chemical residues which can be found in conventional cottons. When the Soil Association organic standard is given, it means that organic standards have been met and checked at every stage to the final hotel product.
As a hotel linens supplier, fou furnishings ensures that The Green House Hotel linens achieve the highest standards of ethical and sustainable sourcing, combined with hotel functionality, quality, craftsmanship and comfort for hotel guests. Fou furnishings has worked with the hotel to develop linens standards, new bespoke product, sourcing luxury organic cotton bedding and towels in natural organic cottons. All linens are rigorously tested for hotel laundry performance as well as certified organic.
Organic bedding and towels are also hypo-allergenic and combined with the hotel’s bespoke eco beds made in the UK, the Green House offers its guests green and sumptuously comfortable rooms which in turn benefit the environment and sustainable tourism development.
Ozone Laundry Operation
The hotel invested in an ozone laundry operation on-site. Ozone technology allows for shorter wash cycles, resulting in significant energy and water savings. Enhanced cleansing, powerful disinfection and reduced wear-and-tear are some of the added benefits on successful calibration of the machines and linens. The machines are the most energy and water efficient available (Energy Star rated). As all Green House laundry is washed in house, this enables the hotel to keep control of the detergents used, (naturally, they only use those that are phosphate and paraben free), to address waste management and minimise damage to the environment.
Changes to the sourcing and in-house management of linens not only achieved sustainable standards in water and energy consumption but also ensured the linens changeover enhanced their guests’ stay; as evidenced in the Guest Book comments and feedback:
“This is a hotel that takes pride in all it does. Cutting edge design and technology with an environmental conscience.”
In closing, the Green House Hotel best sums up their commitment to green tourism:
“Getting there has been quite a journey and we’re proud of what we have achieved: a beautiful boutique hotel that lives and breathes sustainability.”
