Birch Cottage is an award winning environmentally-friendly self-catering cottage completely self-sufficient in energy near the beautiful Mourne Mountains in Co. Down. The cottage is on Lackan Cottage Farm a permaculture smallholding run by passionate and extremely knowledgeable owners who have used local, sustainable and low impact building techniques and materials throughout.

The cottage has been renovated and upgraded using a variety of different natural building materials such as wood fibre insulation, lime plaster, breathable recycled paper membranes, wood-wool board and sheep’s wool insulation. It has solar thermal panels and a wood burning stove for heating and uses renewable electricity supplied via solar PV panels and a wind turbine on the farm.

The farm has an abundance of natural and ecological habitats and numerous demonstration projects showing how you can live a more sustainable low impact lifestyle. Guests are provided with local, home-grown produce when in season and eggs from the chickens on the farm. Birch Cottage is a relaxing retreat in stunning countryside that offer guests a truly green holiday.
