Harehope Quarry Project Ltd
The Harehope Quarry Project aims to demonstrate a more sustainable way of living through a range of environmental, economic and social projects. The project has an eco-classroom that is the focus for education, training and community events. We also run a nature reserve and smallholding.
The eco-classroom is off-grid and its energy is provided by wind, solar and hydro power. It is heated by a ceramic stove, water supply is from a spring, the toilets are composting and all materials used are environmentally friendly and where possible locally sourced. There is permissive access provided to the eastern and western ends of the nature reserve. The project has a community events programme as well as delivering environmental education and training. The smallholding grows vegetables and fruit, has a Forest Garden and keeps pigs and chickens.A grazing regime is being introduced to manage the limestone grassland.
