Green Tourism Certified: the next chapter in certification.

Posted • October 19, 2026

As Green Tourism enters its 30th year, our certification has evolved to reflect how much the tourism industry, sustainability expectations and the wider regulatory landscape have changed.

Green Tourism Certified brings together 30 years of experience working with tourism and hospitality businesses, with ESG-aligned criteria, practical support and independent third-party auditing.

The evolution comes at an important time for the industry. On 27 September 2026, the EU’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive came into force, introducing new requirements around sustainability labels and green claims.

Green Tourism Certified meets the requirements of the ECGT Directive, providing businesses with a credible way to demonstrate that their sustainability credentials have been independently audited, and ensuring certified businesses can appear on sustainability filters on OTAs such as Booking.com.

The certification process combines practical guidance and expert support with independent auditing. Businesses work through 10 sustainability modules with a Green Tourism Advisor before submitting their evidence for independent assessment.

After 30 years of helping tourism businesses improve their sustainability performance, Green Tourism Certified represents the next stage of that work: putting three decades of practical experience behind a certification approach designed for the needs of today’s tourism industry.
