Headingley Stadium

At Headingley Stadium, sustainability isn’t just an initiative – it’s part of who we are.

As the proud home of Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, we understand the powerful role sport can play in bringing people together, tackling climate change and inspiring positive action across our communities. Our mission is simple: reduce our environmental impact and lead by example, on and off the pitch.

Engaging Fans in Climate Action

We’re proud to be the first rugby league club to join Pledgeball, a global movement linking sport with climate action. Through Pledgeball, we invite fans to make small but meaningful commitments to reduce their carbon footprint. It’s a powerful way to embed sustainability into rugby culture and spark change beyond game day

Together with Ecotricity, the world’s first green energy company and now our official 100% renewable energy supplier, we have also launched a supporter travel survey to engage fans and help shape future plans for greener, more efficient matchday journeys – ensuring our approach reflects the needs of our community.

Supporting Access, Inclusivity and Community

Our Kit & Equipment Exchange Programme, delivered with Active Leeds, ensures good-quality sports kit is reused rather than discarded. Supporters can donate items at the South Stand concourse, helping others access sport while reducing unnecessary waste. It’s sustainability, inclusivity and community support working hand in hand.

Championing Cleaner Travel for All

With transport being a major source of emissions, we’re taking steps to make greener travel more accessible and inclusive for everyone, with:

  • Subsidised travel with First Bus, including zero-emission double deckers, each saving over 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ over their lifetime
  • Promotion of the Leeds City Council Liftshare scheme for supporters
  • Electric vehicle showcases from AMT Auto, supported by McNally EV charging points at the South Stand car park

Our goal is to make it easier than ever for fans to choose cleaner, more sustainable ways to get to the stadium.

Educating and Inspiring Future Generations

Through the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, we’re championing ESG awareness across our region – encouraging more sustainable travel and food choices, promoting energy reduction, and engaging communities in climate action.

We’re already recycling 655 of our waste with zero to landfill and are committed to:

  • Achieving net-zero scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030
  • Reducing scope 3 emissions by 37% by 2050

These targets aren’t for show – they’re part of a long-term, club-wide commitment to environmental leadership.

Our Commitment

Sustainability is embedded into everything we do, from supply chains and project design to community engagement and daily operations. We’re proud to have been awarded Silver Accreditation from Green Tourism in recognition of these efforts.

This is our green story – and we’re only just getting started. Together with our fans, partners, and community, we’re powering sport towards a greener future.
