Reducing water waste in hospitality without impacting guest experience

It goes without saying that water is an essential part of hospitality operations – from guest bathrooms to kitchens and laundry.

The good news is that reducing your water usage doesn’t have to affect your guests’ experience. Here are a few practical, low-impact ways to reduce water use across your business:

Install water-saving devices

Simple fittings like tap aerators and low-flow showerheads reduce water consumption while maintaining pressure and comfort for guests. These are low-cost upgrades that can deliver immediate savings across bedrooms and back-of-house areas.

Check features regularly and fix leaks quickly

Even a small drip can waste thousands of litres over time. Regular maintenance checks in guest rooms, kitchens and bathrooms ensure leaks are identified and fixed early. Building this into housekeeping and maintenance routines can make a big difference.

Review your linen, towel and room clean programmes

Encouraging guests to re-use towels and linen, or skip a days’ room clean, can significantly reduce your laundry volume. Simple, clear messaging in rooms is often enough to get guests to re-use these items. You could also offer a small incentive to reward guests who take part.

Optimise kitchen and laundry processes

Only running the dishwasher when full, and scraping plates instead of rinsing under running water, are both simple yet effective ways to reduce unnecessary water usage. If you have an on-site laundry, make sure you’re using the correct load size and cycle to reduce both water and energy consumption.

Train and engage your team

Staff awareness is key. Simple training will help your team to understand where water is used most, and encourages small behavioural changes such as turning taps off between tasks or reporting leaks immediately.

Use water-efficient cleaning practices

Review your cleaning procedures to ensure water isn’t being used unnecessarily. For example, using spray bottles, microfibre cloths and controlled dispensing systems can significantly reduce water consumption in housekeeping.
